Moving on to my second print, I decided to create multiple prints that would make up a horizontally long print when placed next to each other. It was inspired by the idea of immigrating to Australia, and how it is perceived as an island to me despite how large the land is. Through landscape art, I wanted to show the kind of beauty that the country I’m from doesn’t have. Along the way of researching collagraph artists, I’ve discovered Juliana Neild, Laurie Rudling and Suzie Mackenzie. A hand colour collagraph, “Flood in the Strath“ by Suzie Mackenzie especially inspired me to create such pleasing landscape art.

I cut three sets of identical-sized cardboard. The two plates at each end and the two plates slightly smaller than the plates at each end are equal sizes. The middle three small plates are also the same size, except the very middle one is turned sideways. This repetitive variation of plates’ sizes was to create a stable perspective on the panorama of the landscape.

I sketched the outline of the islands on another equal-sized set of cardboard, cut them with scissors and PVA glued them onto the original cardboard.

This is what it looked like after finishing all the plates:

I placed the cardboard onto the paper, marked the points of the cardboard in each corner with a mechanical pencil, and then connected the dots with a ruler to cut papers to the exact sizes of each cardboard.

I also, of course, shellacked all plates twice on the back and three times on the front within intervals of 15 minutes.
