To explore the theme of Place, our class went to Flagstaff Gardens for inspiration. We took photos, drew, sketched and collected things that could be used as stencils such as leaves. Here are some memorable photos I took:

I heard from my lecturer that people could look out to the sea from the highest hill in the garden, which was now all covered by tall buildings. It made me view this garden in a much different way, as a place with people's memories of it being a great lookout point to the sea. This inspired me to think that someone's memory of a place is heavily significant to what the place means to them. Thus, I decided to express my memorable moments of Flagstaff Gardens to show what I remember the place as or what I have associations with.

I think the photo above shows both the coexistence and contrast between a busy city and a peaceful natural landscape. The atmosphere of this garden was deeply engrained in me with tranquillity as I felt the calmness of sketching the garden and seeing people enjoy their time at the park.

One of the most memorable things I saw at this park was a seagull walking towards me. I found its roundness and soulless eyes very adorable and it was indelible in my head. Thus I added that to my sketch, thinking of adding it to my prints through a stencil.
